Maatkare (UK/NL)
In the heart of a male-dominated death metal landscape stands Maatkare – an all-female force breathing new life into the forgotten voices of history. Rooted in Egyptian mythology, Maatkare has expanded its vision beyond Egypt to illuminate the powerful women lost to time, bringing their stories into the modern world through their music.
Founded in March 2020, Maatkare channels the pharaohcity of death and black metal, drawing influence from bands such as Nile, Scarab, Septic Flesh, Behemoth, Arch Enemy, and Kataklysm. Their music is a brutal yet reverent retelling of history, giving voice to female rulers, warriors, and visionaries erased from the pages of time.
Named after one of Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s many titles, Maatkare embodies the strength of female power – past, present, and future. Led by the commanding Janneke de Rooy (Beyond The Pale) on vocals, bassist Amie Chatterley (Dakesis, WomenOwar), guitarist Georgia Bell (Harper) and drummer Natalie Gaines (VoyD).
The band’s debut album, Rise to Power, was released on October 18, 2024 to much critical acclaim, and explored the reign of Hatshepsut and the tumultuous era she ruled. This debut album amassed over 100,000 collective streams within just three months of it’s release, cementing Maatkare as a rising force in the death metal scene.
Since their launch, Maatkare have performed at Red Crust Festival, Underground Deathfest and Bloodstock Open Air, with 2026 promising more live dates across the UK and Europe as well as the release of their second album.
Maatkare brings a wealth of experience and a shared mission: to resurrect history’s forgotten queens and warriors through epic soundscapes and evocative metal.
Sirens of sound. Women of history. Maatkare has arrived.
